It is with deep sadness that we record the death of Lieutenant Colonel J M V M Cargin LVO (Johnny) in hospital in Cork on Friday 2nd November 2012 after a short illness.

Johnny Cargin was commissioned into the 1st Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers on 17th December 1965.  He commanded the 1st Battalion Royal Irish Rangers between 20th April 1986 and 31st March 1989 being succeeded in command by Lieutenant Colonel P C C Trousdell, the current Colonel of  The Royal Irish Regiment.  He retired on 1st March 1994.

During his service, and in addition to his Regimental duty, he served as Equerry to His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh between 1980 and 1982 for which service he was made a Member of the Royal Victorian Order.

Lieutenant Colonel J M V M Cargin’s funeral took place on Wednesday 7th November 2012 in St John’s Catholic (The Parish) Church, Kinsale.

He leaves behind his wife Rosie and children Charlotte, Sophie, Louise and Nick
